SUPERFOODS – ARE THEY REALLY “SUPER”? There’s been a lot of talk of late about so-called Superfoods of late. And it’s often a question I get from clients. So I thought I’d give my current view... Some common examples of Superfoods are: Barely grass, Kelp, Chlorella, Spirulina and Goji juice/berries. These foods are “super” in way...but they’re not magic! The super-ness appears to come from the fact that they happen to be more dense than your average fruit or vegetable in micronutrients , anti-oxidants etc. Some also contain detoxifying properties. I believe some are even purported to have anti-pathogenic properties. There are claims that these foods do all kinds of things, however, to the best of my knowledge, the benefits, therapeutic or otherwise, I understand come from the afore-mentioned ingredients only. But who knows, science may discover other therapeutic compounds in these foods that have been helping us humans all along! I do use them myself, and recommend the use of them – as there seems to be little to no downside, and potentially some reasonable benefits. I use them as natural whole-food “Multivitamin”. However, as always, supplements should never replace a good healthy balanced diet! P.s. if you have an allergy, such as to salicylates or amines, you may not be able to take such foods. Always discus with your Doctor or Health Care Professional before trying something new.
