SUPERVISED INTRODUCTIONS a question Im frequently asked is how to deal with dog aggression when two new dogs are meeting for the first time, or even when there is aggression being shown between two dogs in the same household that are familiar with each other - one method that is often effective is a supervised introduction - the supervised introduction is most effective when done after some strenuous leashed exercise - the procedure is best done with two people - the dogs are held by the collar with one hand and under the waist with the other hand - the least aggressive dog is held so its nose makes contact with the more aggressive dogs butt - care must be taken by the handlers that neither dog can attack the other - once the least aggressive dog has had its sniff, positions are reversed so the other dog can get a sniff of the other dogs butt - make sure there is contact, nose to butt - raised hackles can be smoothed by hand, raised tails can also be lowered by hand - its very difficult for a dog to be aggressive if its tail is down, even if its held down by hand - once the supervised introduction is done, take both dogs for a leashed walk - in summary, #1) take both dogs for a strenuous leashed run ( a free run isnt going to accomplish what you want ) - #2) do the supervised introduction - smooth raised hackles or raised tails by hand - #3) take both dogs for a leashed walk - if they are still tense or showing aggression, have your helper walk one dog and you the other, but walk so the dogs get the feeling they are walking together - the problem with aggression between dogs meeting for the first time is more common with dogs that are taken from their littermates before 12 weeks - puppies learn social skills between the ages of 8 - 16 weeks, and they learn it from their littermates - aggression when meeting new dogs is also magnified by a handler that has a tight leash or worse, pulling back on the leash - a tight leash builds aggression spiritofthenorthkennels
