SURF REPORT: Well I had some tiny but lovely longboard waves at Vazon this evening! Did anybody get in at Portinfer or Perelle? I’m sure that they would only have been suitable for a longboard or a Kayak or an SUP, but I bet they were ridable too. For about a week now, our friends in North Cornwall and parts of North Devon have enjoyed glassy seas, with a steady pulse of 2-3’ groundswell. This is because there has been a production-line of low pressure systems running from the Labrador Sea to Iceland and beyond. They have sent small but consistent swell from the far northwest. Frustratingly this put Guernsey rather in the shadow of Southwest England. To add insult to injury, until Wednesday, we suffered a lot more wind because we were that much further away from the high pressure centre. Unfortunately there is no great change on the horizon, but I shall try my best to highlight some forthcoming opportunities for wave-starved Guernsey surfers: Friday afternoon will be an opportunity to hoist the sail or fly the kite; force 5-6 northwesterlies, 2-3’ choppy wind waves, neap tide high at 3:20pm. Saturday morning could be a fun shorebreak at Pembroke; force 5 north-northeasterlies, 3-4’ choppy wave faces, best around 7am (about 2 hours after high tide). Sunday will probably be too small, but if the wind is light enough then there might just be some shin ticklers at Vazon, during the late afternoon tidal push. Monday and Tuesday afternoons both present the same slim possibilities as Sunday. The next real opportunity will probably not be until the high pressure system retreats southwards, and we see the return of wet and windy westerlies. It is uncertain whether this will be during the first or second week of December. Keep an eye on my weather forecasts next week, when the story will hopefully become a bit clearer.
