SURVEY: GUNNISON SAGE-GROUSE “SECURE” Colorado Parks and Wildlife have completed counts of the Gunnison sage-grouse population in Colorado and Utah, and, at a meeting of federal, state and local officials Thursday, Kathy Griffin of CPW told officials that the Gunnison sage-grouse numbers have increased and that the “species is secure.” The count is significant because state officials are trying to fend off a proposed listing of the Gunnison sage-grouse as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. There are about 5,000 of the birds in western Colorado and eastern Utah, with by far the largest concentration, some 4,000, in the Gunnison Basin. -GJ Daily Sentinel, 05.30.14
