SWACHCHA BHARAT ABHIYAN (स्वच्छ भारत अभियान -- Clean India Campaign) “Charity begins at home;” so also cleanliness starts from home. We should start it first by keeping our premises clean and then our colony, street, locality, and town. It should start from the grassroots level. No campaign will succeed unless and otherwise the people in a particular locality are determined to keep their areas clean. To substantiate my stance, here is an interesting anecdote: When I was the NSS Program officer of PSG Arts College, Coimbatore, our unit (comprising 100 students) organized a 10-day camp at Arasur Village in Coimbatore. Our activities for the camp included, inter alia, making a mud road to the crematorium ground, free medical camp, and cleaning a common area for the people to congregate. We were shocked to learn that this common area around a Ganesha idol kept on a small platform was used by the local people as an open toilet. We decided to clean it. It was the most difficult task to clean an area full of human refuse. Somehow, we achieved it. To our shocking surprise, the next morning our students discovered that the situation was back to square one – the whole area was again covered with crap; it appeared as though we cleaned the area for the dirty people to defecate comfortably. We did not give up; we had to resort to a trick to achieve our goal. It happened in the 80’s. Hopefully, today, the situation will be different there. Therefore, let’s welcome any cleanliness campaign that will help us lead a healthy life. If there is awareness at grassroots level, the government’s role will be minimal. Help keep the environment clean.
