SWAIA announces John Paul Rangel, PhD as PR & Marketing Director Dr. Rangel Brings Proven Track Record Promoting Native Art and Artists For Immediate Release – April 29, 2014 Contact: Stockton Colt, scplic@q The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA), the New Mexico-based non-profit organization that produces the annual Santa Fe Indian Market, is proud to announce the addition of John Paul Rangel, PhD as the Director of Public Relations and Marketing. Dr. Rangel is a writer, artist/designer and Native scholar of Apache, Navajo and Spanish-Mestizo descent. He worked with SWAIA from 2008-2009 leading the public relations and marketing function, but he left the organization to refocus on his education. He returns after obtaining his PhD in Education at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Rangel brings eighteen years of industry experience to SWAIA. Since 2000, he has been the owner and creative director for his own design and marketing business in Santa Fe. Over many years, he has built relationships with local and national vendors, and he has worked with Native artists nationally and also in Canada, most recently with noted Native filmmaker Loretta Todd. “Dr. Rangel’s coming to SWAIA is a tangible sign of the Board of Directors’ commitment to strengthening our staff with dedicated professionals, said Stockton Colt, Board Chairman. “Santa Fe Indian Market will take place this year, as it has in its previous 92 years. And our goal is to make it the best yet, made possible by the best artists, staff and volunteers we can find.” Over the last fourteen years Dr. Rangel has worked specifically with Native arts and education, non-profit organizations, and with individual artists. His experience reflects years of service and commitment to Native arts, culture, and education. In addition to working with SWAIA, Dr. Rangel has also worked with the Native American Studies department at the University of New Mexico, The Institute for American Indian Research at UNM, the Alfonso Ortiz Center for Intercultural Studies at UNM, and the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Dr. Rangel has served as an adjunct faculty member and consultant for the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe since 2003. He has taught courses in studio arts, art history, writing, new media and indigenous liberal studies. “I am passionate about Indigenous arts, focusing on local but thinking global, and actively pursuing projects and employment that align with my creative and academic interests,” shared Dr. Rangel. “Further, I am invested in continuing to develop long-term and sustainable relations with Native artists, organizations and communities.” About SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market The Santa Fe Indian Market exists to provide a platform for established and aspiring Native/Indigenous artists to nurture and sell the art they create. ###
