SWAMC Board votes to pull fishing community resolution from consideration by Ernie Weiss, aebfish.org 3/4/14 One of the tasks of the SWAMC Board at their annual pre-conference meeting is to review the resolutions submitted by members. One resolution submitted by new member Gulf of Alaska Coastal Community Coalition (GOAC3) dominated the board discussion Tuesday evening. There were 2 versions of the resolution because acting executive director Erik OBrien had modified the resolution, then brought both the modified and original versions to the Board. In the end, the Board took a roll call vote on whether or not to let either version go to the membership for consideration. They voted to pull both resolutions. Both draft resolutions, 14-07 and 14-07b included the following: BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the SWAMC Membership requests the NPFMC ensure that the Gulf of Alaska trawl bycatch management program....includes adequate community protections to sustain fisheries access for Southwest Alaska communities, provide opportunities for new entrants and maintain community benefits including crew jobs to adequately protect the vibrant coastal economies and cultures of Southwest Alaskas fishing communities. Only two Board Members present voted to allow either fishing community resolution to go to the membership, Paul Gronholdt and Alice Ruby. Rubys term on the Board expires this year and our friends in Bristol Bay have a great opportunity to give Alice Ruby another term as SWAMC Board member at this meeting. Of all the Board members who voted against the GOAC3 resolution, only Board President Louise Stutes seat will last until 2015, however Stutes is leaving the board after the 2014 annual meeting. The rest of the Board members present who voted against the GOAC3 resolution hold seats with terms that expire this year. It is unclear if the Board has ever pulled a resolution from consideration that was submitted by a member in good standing. The Board seemed to agree that resolutions may still be offered at the membership meeting with the signed consent of two current Board members. Resolutions will be considered at the SWAMC Annual Membership meeting Friday morning March 7th at the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage. Below is the list of the SWAMC Board members who voted to keep the fishing community resolutions from the membership: Louise Stutes - President Kodiak Municipal Seat term expires 2015 Layton Lockett - Treasurer Aleutians/Pribilofs Municipal Seat term expires 2014 Mayor Shirley Marquardt Aleutians/Pribilofs Municipal Seat term expires 2014 Glen Gardner At Large Seat B term expires 2014 Trevor Brown Kodiak Associate Seat term expires 2014 Michelle Ravenmoon Bristol Bay Municipal Seat term expires 2014
