SWANSTON ST WALL COLLAPSE: So you might have heard that Grocon is pleading guilty to the wall collapse that took the lives of three innocent bystanders. They have pleaded guilty but only to one charge, and only on the condition that its heard in front of the magistrate rather than a jury. What does that mean? the maximum penalty goes from $1.1million down to $305,350. Grocon has admitted it is guilty of a crime in court today. But they negotiated a deal to avoid a trial, and will walk away with a small fine that amounts to a slap on the wrist. The union was fined over $1 million for speaking out and protesting against Grocon over safety issues. Grocon will pay just a fraction of that amount, after three young people with their lives ahead of them were killed on their unsafe site.There will now be a trial for the sub-contractor and we hope we might get to the truth.
