SWFL 1 - Sunday 9th March Falkirk Ladies v Cumbernauld Colts The first team had their opening league game of the season today at Stirling University. Their opponents were last seasons 5th place finishers and were always going to make Falkirk work for every ball. With the grass bumpy and in not the best condition it was tough going for both teams but they tried to play football from the start. The visitors had the better start with the speed of their wingers causing the Falkirk defenders problems. 10 minutes in and a poor clearance in midfield created a 2v1 outside the 18 yard box. But a forward pass from the Colts players during the move that created a great goal saved the home side from being a goal down. Falkirk then had a great move after Nicole Pullar brought down the ball, turned the defender and drove towards the box. Only a brilliant last ditch tackle stopped her from getting a shot away. Cumbernauld went back up the pitch and forced a series of corners and on 18 minutes a corner was swung in and Nicole Huchison was unmarked and headed the ball home. 1-0. Both sides played some attacking football and had chances throughout the fist half. On 35 minutes continued pressure from Falkirk outside the left hand Colts penalty box saw Nicole pull the ball back to Jade Gallon who whipped the ball into the 6 yard box and Rebecca Roberston headed the ball home to make it 1-1. The game ended 1-1 at half-time with Falkirk having only 10 players on the pitch as defender Lauren Gallon had felt her hamstring tweak. The second half was very similar to the first with both teams driving forward, trying to get the winning goal. Not many clear chances during the next 45 minutes until the 77th minutes when the Colts again had a corner that broke back out to the taker Fern who took a fantastic shot that flew past the Falkirk keeper Zoe Birkbeck to make it 2-1. The home side fought hard until the full-time whistle but could not break the breakthrough and the Cumbernauld took the 3 points from the first league match.
