SWFL1 Sunday 14th September Congratulations to our first team as they took all 3 points away from home in a tough match against promotion hopefuls Hearts LFC. The Falkirk team won the match 3-1 with a double from Rachel Donaldson and a late 3rd goal from Ashley McDonald. Sitting in 2nd place before the game started the squad knew that they needed 4 points to secure a promotion spot back to the SWPL but due to Cumbernauld Colts drawing 3-3 away at Aberdeen Reserves the team have earned enough points to be promoted with 4 games to spare. Falkirk had the early pressure in the game when both Jade Gallon and Nicole Pullar had long range efforts just go over the crossbar. Another chance followed soon after when good play between Beth McKay and Emma Lyons saw the ball passed into Jade at the edge of the box but again her shot just went over the bar. But the firsts goal came soon after as Jade played a great ball to Kerry Kennedy who played a long ball into Nicole Pullar. Nicole flicked the ball onto Rachel Donaldson who rounded the keeper to make it 1-0. Hearts then had their first chance of the game when their no 10 cut in from the left and got away a right footed strike but it sailed over the bar. But their efforts paid off soon after as a through ball saw the Falkirk GK Zoe Birkbeck unable to beat the striker to the ball who then equalised 1-1. But the scoreline soon favoured the visitors again after Falkirk had a free kick floated into the box by Beth McKay and Rachel Donaldson leapt like a salmon to head the ball home for a 2-1 lead and her 2nd goal of the match. The game continued on an even keel at 2-1 until just before full time and Rachel became the goal provider as she put in a great cross from the right to the back post where Ashley McDonald was waiting to tap home. Soon after the referee blew the final whistle and the celebrations started. A massive well done to every player in the squad for working so hard this season and believing in themselves and what the team could achieve. Congratulations also to the coaches Tommy Hamilton Alan Palmer and Bobby Downie for working tirelessly with the girls and giving them the confident to play so well throughout the year. But the season is not over as they face Hibernian Ladies on Sunday 28th September in the Scottish Cup quarter final. This will be a huge test of how far the team has come when they play the Edinburgh side which has pushed for the SWPL title over the past years. Falkirk have also never reached this far in the competition before but the team are determined to give a good account of themselves against an excellent team. Then on the 5th October the team travel away to play Aberdeen Reserves as they look to win their last 4 league games and push for the 1st Division title. But as for today the team and coaches will enjoy the moment and celebrate their promotion back to the top flight of the womens game after only one season being in the SWFL1.
