SYCAMORE STATE MATHCOUNTS TEAM CHAMP: For the 5th time in the last 7 years, Sycamore School won the MATHCOUNTS team state competition last weekend. The winning team members were Alex Gu, Michelle Shen, Andrew Wu and Aidan Sher and their coaches were Trent Tormoehlen and Bob Fischer. Individually, Kevin Liu of Carmel Middle School and Alex Gu of Sycamore School tied for first place. Kevin won the tie-breaker and was named the 2014 Indiana State MATHCOUNTS champion. Michelle Shen of Sycamore School in 4th place. Kevin, Alex, Ben and Michelle will represent Indiana at the national competition with Bob Fischer and Trent Tormoehlen as their coaches. Also scoring high for Sycamore School was Andrew Wu in 7th place, Brian Liu in 15th place and Grace Lee in 16th place. Jay Maturi, Aidan Sher, Arunabh Sinha, Isaac Meng and Rachael Tan also competed for Sycamore and all finished in the top 25% of competitors. The Indiana Statewide MATHCOUNTS competition was held at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute. Over 200 students representing 50 schools competed in this prestigious event. MATHCOUNTS is a popular nationwide math competition that encompasses all 50 states and 7 territories. The competition culminates in May at the Disney World where 4 students from each state and territory come together for the National MATHCOUNTS Competition. The state competition consists of an individual contest and a team contest. In the individual contest, the top 4 students earn the opportunity to represent Indiana at the National Competition in May. For the team competition, each school designates 4 team members and the team score is determined by an average of the individual rounds plus the number correct on a collaborative team round. The coaches of the winning team represent Indiana at the national contest as the coaches of the 4 students that qualified as individuals..
