Sabbath Message for October 25, 2014 from Dr. Hughon W. James, Personal Ministries Leader, Basseterre Seventh-day Adventist Church: My beloved friends, the challenges that we face in our lives, individually and collectively, are real, varied, numerous, and often persistent. Much of our time is spent solving problems, pursuing goals or seeking fulfilment, and at times, fortunately, we may experience overflowing delight when our relentless efforts are proven successful. But how are we supposed to deal with challenges and avoid failure amidst so many confounding, intervening or conflicting circumstances and so many perplexing variations of individual or philosophical perspective? This is an open question that each of us, making use of appropriate dialogue and consultation as well as basic common sense guidelines, would need to answer for ourselves, God being our ultimate, inspired Helper. The challenges that present themselves in today’s world include threats and crises in relation to family, health, education, friendship, freedom, money, power, religion, and so on. Oftentimes, due to perceived unfairness, insensitivity or discrimination, people may claim and activate their right to protest as has been the case quite recently in various cities around the world including Tripoli, Tunis, Sanaa, Sarajevo, Sofia, Port-au-Prince, Manama, Manila, Kabul, Karachi, Kiev, Istanbul, Ferguson, Damascus, Cairo, Caracas, Baghdad, Bangkok, Brasilia, Bucharest, and even our little capital, peaceful Basseterre. We have observed that, through violent protest, some may be willing to give their very lives to defend a cause. But is it really worth it in the end? The kingdom of heaven promotes peaceful living. We have been admonished to “live in peace” (2 Cor. 13:11), to “follow peace with all men” (Heb. 12:14), to “let the peace of God rule” (Col. 3:15) in our hearts. As we face life’s many challenges, whether big or small, Jesus also says to us today like He did to the disciples of old: “peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you” (John 14:27). So, fear not; just accept His peace.
