Sabbath School Summary Lesson 9 One Lawgiver And Judge Memory Text: James 4:12 SATURDAY: Our view of the law, both human law and Gods law determines how we relate to others and God. It determines the degree of respect we have for the wisdom of the lawgivers and the fairness of their laws. Some lawgivers tend to make laws for personal gain whilst others tend to be rigid on the law. Both attitudes leads to a form of arrogance and self-dependency on the law which we are warned about as being sin. SUNDAY: When we judge others, we sit in judgement of the law (James 4:11). By placing ourselves in the judgement seat, we ignore our weaknesses, as if we were somehow outside of or above the law. We are to have spiritual discernment not judgement, we are to compare what people preach with the word of God and if possible, encourage church members to settle their disputes among themselves instead of going to court. MONDAY: Although sometimes called the law of Moses, because it was through him that it was given, all the laws of the Old Testament are from Jesus (Nehemiah 10:29, John 1:14, 12:48). We are not to judge our neighbors because there is only one law giver and judge (James 4:12). God has committed all judgement into His Son, and as He assessed the Scribes and Pharisees whether the law has been transgressed, when He comes again, His reward is with Him to give to all according to their works (Revelation 22:12). TUESDAY: Planning ahead for the future and living for Christ are not necessarily in conflict. Knowing that all our earthly possessions will be consumed oneday (2 Peter 3:10-12), we must plan as if Christ were not coming for years but live each day as if Christ were coming tomorrow. Rather than making our plans too definite, Instead you ought to say, If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that (James 4:15). All our plans should be surrendered to God. WEDNESDAY: Life is uncertain since theres always an imminence of death. Every breath is a gift. Any of us, at any moment, for any number of reasons, could die in an instant (James 4:14). Apart from life being short, it is also unsatisfying. There are so much injustice, so much unfairness, so much that doesnt make sense in this life. Without the promise of eternal life made to us through Jesus, we are just like a mist that will be gone and forever forgotten. THURSDAY: Apart from boasting, if we are not ignorant of the right thing and yet we do the wrong thing, it is a sin (James 4:15-17). We are not to depend on ourselves and boast of the future, such attitudes are evil. Sin is defined as; (1). doing wrong (2). not doing right (James 4:17, 1 John 3:4). We must therefore be called children of light and let our light shine before men and not only resisting temptation to do wrong. Since we can be discouraged from doing the good we might wont to do everyday, we must emulate the life of Jesus by seeking for Gods will in everything we do (John 5:30). FRIDAY: The spirit of discerning the evil motives of others as a necessary consequence on dealing with wrong doers is not from above. Its originator is Satan himself. He who is guilty of wrong is the first to suspect wrong. By condemning another, he is trying to conceal or excuse the evil of his own heart. -Ellen G. White, Talents, Christs Object Lessons, pp. 342-346, Thoughts From the Mount of Blessings, p. 126.
