Sabbatical observations day 40. Lords Day morning (4/13/14). I believe there is a genetic correlation between the Gospel of Christ and the nature of the Gathered People/church. If Thomas Campbells assertion that the church is necessarily essentially, intentionally and constitutionally ONE then this is so because of the nature of the Gospel itself. The Gospel is the Good News of Reconciliation! Reconciliation with God. Reconciliation between humans. Reconciliation with all creation. It is the good news of God making One out of the animosity and divisions humanity has wrought in His good creation. Therefore Unity IS Truth. To be unified is to experience the Gospel of Gods reconciliation. The Gospel requires and produces a unified People Gathered by Gods gracious Spirit. Thus any experience of unity is an experience of the Gospel itself. Meditation on Campbells D&A has helped me think this thru. But this also has lots to say about our daily lives as disciples ... including our marriages. The Gospel is about unity - Oneness. A quick Scriptural grounding. Have you ever noticed how what I just said is basically the structure of Ephesians? Ephesians 1 = heaven and earth are reconciled and now One. Ephesians 2 = humanity is reconciled to one another and are now One. Ephesians 5 = husbands and wives are no longer fighting and reconciled and are now One. Thus the nature of Gods Good News produces One Family. People who live in loving unity with God, fellow humans, even their husbands and wives. In the middle of those references in Ephesians is 4.1-4 which is the paraphrastic basis of Campbells words ... We are One! Think about it my friends. We assemble on this Lords Day BECAUSE we be live in the Gospel of UNITY. Blessings & Shalom
