Sacramentos Lavender Heights neighborhood in Midtown is the undisputed hub of gay pride in Californias capital. Hoping to stave off gentrification, including a new Whole Foods, Lavender Heights residents want to honor the neighborhoods role in LGBTQ history before the area undergoes the type of dramatic change that has altered the face of historically gay neighborhoods like San Franciscos Castro. A group of activists has launched a campaign to have the district designated as an official historic district. That could include special street signs and a large rainbow flag, like the one that dominates the sky in San Francisco’s Castro district. There’s also talk of painting the stripes in the crosswalks at 20th and K into the colors of the rainbow, the symbol of pride for the gay community. Do you think historic district designation would prevent gentrification and change? Or would it hasten it? Discuss amongst yourselves.
