Sacred ground disturbed by an archaeology project in Hagwilget. Hagwilget or Hagwilgyet is a First Nations reserve community of the Wetsuweten people located on the lower Bulkley River just east of Hazelton in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. (Wikipedia) During a Hydro Pole renewal project, archaeologists accidentally disturbed a burial site. The disturbance left a bad feeling in the community for years to come. The BC Hydro personnel showed up to apologize and took a class on cross cultural archaeological awareness. The community and archaeologists work together to socially, culturally, psychologically and spiritually unite. The Hydro team then shot 16 hours of raw footage into a 17 minute documentary that honors the ancestors of the site and the community. On Aug. 15, 2011, when we stepped onto the site in Hagwilget where BC Hydro had accidentally disturbed a centuries-old burial ground and unleashed years of upheaval for the community five years earlier, the Crossroads team didn’t know what we’d find. We knew that it would be sensitive and we knew that it would be profound. We knew that we needed to document the story as it unfolded. The community’s voice, and the turbulence it had experienced, needed to be shared so this situation would never happen again.
