Sad demise of Khushwant Singh One prominent writer known for his clear cut secularism and a great sense of poetry is Khushwant Singh. One of the best contributions of Khushwant Singh is his novel that he penned in the year 1995, titled as “The Train to Pakistan” which received an overwhelming response across the country and the globe. He is known to be one of the greatest Indian novelist cum journalist. Khushwant Singh was born on 2nd February 1915 at Hadali which is now a part of Punjab in Pakistan which was then in British India in a Sikh family to Sir Sobha Singh, a prominent businessman of Lutyens’ Delhi. He received his early education at New Delhi’s Modern school. Later he completed his graduation through Government College, Lahore and St. Stephen’s college, Delhi. He went for higher studies to London and studied at King’s college where he completed his studies in law. He is known to have an outstanding wit that helps him in making the best assessment and comparison of social and behavioral traits of people worldwide. He derived his inspiration to write from the real life incidents that he came across. Before the partition of India, when Khushwant Singh was practicing as a lawyer in the High Court of Lahore, he was on his way back home. His residence was located at Kasauli which is situated at the foothills of Himalayas. His car came across a jeep filled with Sikhs who were boasting about their deeds especially those of butchering the residents of the Muslim villages. Khushwant Singh has mentioned all these incidents in his novel “The Train to Pakistan”. He later took up the responsibility of editing a wonderful and the leading journal of the government called “Yojana”. He also worked with the Illustrated Weekly of India, The National Herald and the Hindustan times. He was responsible for making the Illustrated Weekly of India, the most prominent one. The period ranging from 1980-1986 marked a new beginning of a political career in Singh’s life and he was elected as the member of the Rajya Sabha during that period. Padma Bhushan was awarded to him in the year 1974 and he returned the same to show his protest for the siege of the Golden Temple in the year 1984 done by the Indian Army. In the year 2007, he was also awarded with the most prestigious Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India.
