Sad news - I just checked in to learn the status of the READ TO DOGS program at our library, which was put on suspension in August, and Ive been informed it will no longer be an option for young readers at our location. . Jack (my pup) and I started the program at the BG branch in early summer 2010 and over time it grew to three or four handler-dog teams providing this opportunity a few times each month. I am saddened by losing this opportunity to work with young readers in our community and hope our young readers can take advantage of the program still being offered at other FVRL branches, such as Downtown Vancouver on ‘C’ Street or at the Three Creeks branch in Salmon Creek. Jack and I will try and think up some way to keep working with young ones on their reading skills. . Here is the response to my inquiry on the status of the program at our branch: “Due to low attendance and constantly struggling to get kids signed up for the program here at Battle Ground, I have decided to do some different programming for that age group this fall. This is not a reflection on any of the handlers who have all done a wonderful job! I just want to try some different ideas that I need to balance with staff and scheduling of the meeting room therefore forcing me to change what we are currently doing. I have really enjoyed working with you and Jack and appreciate all the volunteer time that you have given us here in Battle Ground. I know the children have had a wonderful time reading to you and Jack!”
