Scientists and economists claim the accelerated loss of biodiversity is at risk from overfishing, pollution, habitat loss and climate change. Nearly 30% of seafood species humans consume are already too small to harvest. A prime example is the shrimp harvesting industry off the coast of Maine, which averaged about 25 million pounds a year from 1969 to 1972 and only recorded 600,000 pounds last year - a record low.
