Sad news for the seafood industry and any seafood lovers.. Scientists and economists claim the accelerated loss of biodiversity is at risk from overfishing, pollution, habitat loss and climate change. Nearly 30% of seafood species humans consume are already too small to harvest. A prime example is the shrimp harvesting industry off the coast of Maine, which averaged about 25 million pounds a year from 1969 to 1972 and only recorded 600,000 pounds last year - a record low.
