Sad news to report about Nikolas, the senior beagle rescued from Harnett County, NC on December 16th. Here is his story... Unfortunately, not every dogs story has a happy ending. And this one for Nikolas might require some tissues. Approximately 10 years old and a Beagle mix, Nikolas arrived at the Harnett County Animal Shelter in North Carolina on December 12th. He was surrendered by his family, who said that their four other younger dogs did not like Nikolas, so they wanted the shelter to euthanize him. Other than his teeth being in bad condition, Nikolas appeared to be healthy. As a senior dog in a crowded rural shelter, it was going to take some real effort to avoid having Nikolas find an adopter or rescue. On December 15th, Chris Leone contacted RADAR to see if we could assist with Nikolas. We immediately provided an offer to assist with his vetting costs as an incentive for a rescue to take him. The next day, Jan Grafton and her Juliets House Rescue in North Carolina agreed to take Nikolas! He went to his temporary foster, Elisabeth McLean. She told us that he loved his squeaky toys! Nikolas was transported to the rescue on December 19th, and went into a foster home. After participating in two adoption events, Nikolas had a potential adopter waiting for him. At his initial vetting on December 30th, routine blood tests revealed that Nikolas had severe kidney failure and was very ill. The painful decision was made to humanely euthanize him. His foster mom, Emily, had showered Nikolas with love in the short time she had with this wonderful, gentle and sweet little Beagle boy. Rest in peace, Nikolas. raisingaidfordogsatrisk.org/nikolas
