Sad to read of the death of the luminous Italian screen legend, Virna Lisi (08/11/36 - 18/12/14). The stunningly beautiful Lisi was originally viewed as an Italian Marilyn Monroe or Brigitte Bardot, (although there were also comparisons made with Hildegard Knef and Kim Novak.) Lisi resented such lazy comparisons and her shot at a career in Hollywood was short-lived for this and other reasons. She turned down the lead in Barbarella, planned for Bardot but played by Jane Fonda, and worked mainly in Europe after the late Sixties, notably for directors such as Liliana Cavani and Stanley Kramer and, in 1993, Patrice Chéreaus breathtaking La Reine Margot in which she played a spectacularly malevolent Catherine de Medici and won the Cannes Best Actress award over the films star, Isabelle Adjani. Lisi retired in the early 2000s. R.I.P.
