Saddended to learn of the passing of environmental activist - TopicsExpress

Saddended to learn of the passing of environmental activist extraordinaire Bill Kortum. He passed away peacefully last night. Bill was a much-loved giant in the environmentalist community in Sonoma County. In the 1960s he led a successful campaign to stop PG&E from constructing a nuclear power plant at Bodega Bay. Bill was a retired veterinarian, former Sonoma County Supervisor and leader of the County’s environmental movement for more than 40 years. He served on the Board of Directors for Sonoma County Conservation Action. I had the pleasure of working with Bill in the coalition fighting to prevent the Dutra Corporation from building an asphalt plant directly across the Petaluma River from Shollenberger Park. He was always kind, smart and articulate. He delighted in telling me stories of some of the creative methods they used in the fight against PG&E. Earlier this year, he volunteered with Move to Amend Sonoma County as a signature gatherer. R.I.P. Bill Kortum. You will be sorely missed.
