Saddened and shocked to hear of the passing of drummer Dave Ratajczak on Friday. He was a warm and classy person and a great musician. I had the honor of studying drums with him way back when I was a student at UConn. He would guest conduct the big band and wouldnt allow me to let a single band figure pass without my acknowledging it somehow. He hipped me to more jazz recordings than any other single individual, The best part of lessons were when I asked him a question and he would write out a list of recordings he wanted me to check out. What a pleasure it was to chase them down (old school: at the record store) and find the answers for myself. He came once a month for lessons and those days were the highlights of my semester. I looked forward to the lessons as much for the information I would receive as for the pleasure of basking in his warmth and encouragement. Rest in peace Mr. Ratajczak. Sorry you left us so soon.
