Sadly, I did not grow up on Judy Garland...outside of yearly Thanksgiving viewings of The Wizard of Oz. When I was cast in a World Premiere production of Robert Patricks UNTIED STATES; one of the roles I was to play was that of Judy Garland...I was fortunate enough to actually get to work with Bob Patrick. One day Bob tells me...Madrid, you dont know Judy, do Liza. Now Liza, I was familiar with, having had a mom who adored Liza. The point to all of this is...over my many years..I have become familiar with the breadth of Judy Garlands work. Watching Judy perform is like taking a Master Class in Performance. The way Judy maneuvers through a song is mesmerizing. Every single word has meaning and one can literally see her personally, emotionally connect the dots. I encourage readers of this post to treat yourself to the video that Ive included, that was shared by Albert Poland...Ms. Garlands Mastery and Craft are astounding, enlightening and testament to the transformative power of performance.
