Sadness is ok. A little nostalgia for the innocence of our childhood is ok: the 70s and early 80s were a simpler, gentler time. Kinda like the Baby Boomer attachment to the 50s and 60s- like the diner Im presently sitting in. Our numbers are demographically far fewer because our parents were doing weird shit, getting divorced more, but mostly they were kinder and listened more than their parents. Generation X will have a short window of control between the two baby booms, we know that, well try to turn a corner to make up for the narcissism, the excess, the hyper capitalist deluded American empire craziness of the post war. Robin, Popeye, Mork, you made us laugh in such hysterics that it hurt, and you touched us with such a gentleness at the same time. You were one that helped us through sad times, mad times, yet these times seem madder, a transition we seem to be feeling our way through as a species. You departed during crazy, turbulent times with a lot of grief in the world. Some are confused why your passing hits us like a ton of bricks while children die all the time in the world. I say your dearness to us brings the preciousness of human life closer to home and the grieving is part of awakening. And I cry huge tears of sorrow, yet joy as well, because you will always be there with the Muppets, Star Wars, Steve Martin, Caddyshack, Taxi, SNL, The Police... Say hi to Orson. Mindy misses you too.
