Saeed bin Musayyab narrated that when Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent armies to Syria, he appointed Yazeed bin Abi Sufyaan, Amr bin Al Aas and Shurahbeel bin Hasana as commanders. When they were mounted, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) walked with them up to Thaniyyatul Wadaa to see them off. The commanders said, 0 Caliph of the Messenger of Allah, you are walking while we ride? Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, am taking these steps with the intention of being rewarded for taking them in the path of Allah. - Part of the lengthy hadeeth narrated by Imam Bayhaqi in Sunan al Kubra 9/85, 17904.
