Safaricom & Airtel Kenya have signed a deal to buy Yumobile for a reportedly Kshs 8 billion. In the deal Safaricom is to acquire all the Yumobile infrastructure while Airtel Kenya will acquire all the subscribers of Yumobile. Yumobile is the third largest mobile network operator in Kenya with a market share of about 9 percent. This acquisition means that one competitor has been edged out of the market & these top operators are conniving to edge out Orange Kenya out of market too. When market competition reduces, the consumer suffers because the supplier of the service can easily connive to apply bad pricing methods that adversely affect consumers. Kenya watchout because this billion dollar telecommunication industry is heading to a monopoly with all the dealings going on.
