Safe back in Brussels from Congo. Craziest pert of the trip was going home. Covering 400 kilometer over land during the rainy season. Car got stuck a dozen times in the mud. Couldnt take a steep climb up a slippery slope. In the middle of the night, three dapper diamond digging dwarves with shovels popped up out of nowhere. They dug us free. We got stuck again in a swamp in the early morning. And in the late morning. And in the late afternoon. Things got predictable and we switched to motorcycles. We rode the last 150 K all through the night in the jungle on 100 CCs. Sounds of screaming monkeys and girl choirs in villages chanting hymns. An occasional opossum or boa crossing our path, giant bats and owls and nightjars caught in our headlights, going mile after mile through narrow long tunnels of lush vegetation, slapped in the face by wet leaves. Than the clouds cleared and the full moon showed up. Dozing off at the back of the bike, deprived for 36 hours of sleep and food and red wine. The hallucinations started to come. Didnt know you could get fata morganae in the jungle. But, true, trees turned into giant dinosaurs and screeching cocks and looming buildings while dark skies and clouds transformed into sequoias and huge mango trees . OMG, life can be beautiful.
