Safely back from matinee show at Guildford. HMS Pinafore was done - TopicsExpress

Safely back from matinee show at Guildford. HMS Pinafore was done extremely well, despite it being an all-male cast. Alan Richardson as Josephine had a lovely light soprano voice and played the part extremely well. Neil Moors as Captain Corcoran was commanding and amusing at the same time and his scenes with Alex Weatherhill as Buttercup were very well played, mainly for comedy. David McKechnie and Richard Russell Edwards were well cast as Sir Joseph Porter and Cousin Hebe respectively. Keith Jack as Ralph was a little disappointing. He certainly looked the part, but his dialogue was mumbled at times, throwing away some important lines. His singing voice, while tuneful, was nowhere near strong enough, but as he had to miss a couple of performances last week, his voice may have still been affected and also we saw a matinee, so he may have been saving himself for the evening performance. All in all an enjoyable performance accompanied only by a piano, ably played by Richard Bates, who also conducted the unaccompanied sections. The costumes were amazing. No getting up in drag, just simple, almost imperceptible changes between when the ensemble were playing men and when women. Scenery - what scenery? Just three bunk beds did the trick admirably.
