Safety advisory from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security regarding ride safety at the Indiana State Fair. Many of these same tips also apply to the rides this week at Ag Days in Mt. Carmel. Over the next few weeks, many Hoosiers will go on amusement rides at the Indiana State Fair, several local and county fairs and festivals. Before stepping foot on a ride, all fairgoers should be aware of some safety tips, and know when to not ride an amusement ride. General Safety Tips · Read all posted rules and listen to instructions given by ride operators. · Keep all body parts inside the ride at all times. Pull long hair back with a hat, band, or hair tie. · Always use the safety equipment provided (seat belt, lap bar, shoulder harness, etc.) · Remain in the ride until it comes to a complete stop at the unloading point. If a ride stops temporarily due to mechanical failure or other reasons, stay seated and wait for an operator to give further instructions. · Do not board a ride with visibly broken parts, signs of improper maintenance, or an inattentive operator. Child Safety Tips · Do not put a child on a ride that they may be afraid of. Tell them to follow instructions and stay seated throughout the ride. · Watch the ride with the child before boarding. Point out the operator and the entrance/exit locations prior to riding. Make sure they understand the instructions and warnings fully. · Tell children to hold on tightly with both hands to lap bars, handholds, or any other item designed specifically for hand placement. Explain this reduces the risk of injury. · Obey minimum height, age, and weight restrictions. Never sneak children onto rides that they are too small or too young for. A smaller or younger child may not be physically or developmentally able to stay safely seated. · If children cannot be counted on to stay seated with hands and feet inside, do not let them ride. Load children to the inside, away from open doorways, or on the side closest to the ride operator. · Explain that rides sometimes stop temporarily, but to not get off until the operator says to. Tell children to not exit the ride while it is still in motion. Persons with Disabilities · Amusement facilities are making strides in addressing the needs of riders with disabilities, but it is not always possible to include everybody and also keep the general public safe. The forces exerted by some rides and/or devices can be dangerous to a rider who cannot maintain the posture required for that ride. · Upon entering an amusement facility, guests with disabilities should visit an information desk and request any information regarding access to the rides.
