Safety on the mountain. Your personal safety. The responsibility - TopicsExpress

Safety on the mountain. Your personal safety. The responsibility of a race and a RD to look after you! Are we over protected with mandatory kit or is this requirement essential to ensure that we dont over estimate our own ability? This weekend TELLURIDE MOUNTAIN RUN takes place, the RD is highly respected ultra runner, Dakota Jones (and Reese Ruland). They state: But don’t worry! We’re not like other races that require safety gear. In fact, we not only don’t require safety gear, we don’t require any gear. So if you want to run naked, then please do so. Just keep in mind that about half the race is above 11,500 feet and all of the race is above 9,000 feet, so you would be rather uncomfortable for a long period of time. Instead of requiring safety gear, we like to trust to the strength and intelligence of our runners. Meaning, we trust that you have the strength and intelligence to either run the whole distance or get back to safety on your own without issue. If you can’t do that we’ll send out search and rescue, and that totally sucks. So don’t make us do that. What do you think? Remarkably refreshing in this modern day safety blanket culture or fool hardy.
