Sahana Singh Here, I screenshot the earlier discussion for you. :-) There probably isnt one reason. To know whether there actually are more Indian Plum Lovers, wed need to hold certain variables steady: Ex-English colony, population, education, income. For all we know, once all those variables are accounted for, we all have the same % of Plummies. But instinctively I think we know theres more to it, because as you pointed out, then the fan pages of all kinds of authors would be dominated by Indians. Im part of the Georgette Heyer page, and that is certainly not the case. In the discussion I screen shot, there were some cultural theories put forth. Eg. A certain part of the Indian population living in big houses with lots of relatives (aunts!) There might be a class system more similar to Englands, then there is in Canada or Australia. But again... Georgette Heyer. A love of language was mentioned. I think there could be something in that. The coming of Penguin books is an interesting theory--wed need to know which authors Penguin published, at a certain period of time, that became widely available in India. Did they all become equally popular? My feeling is theres something similar in Plums humor that matches a sense of humor that already existed among Indians (or educated and/or upper class and/or southern Indians). I have a friend who doesnt really like Indian literature because she finds theres a tone to the language thats (for lack of a better word) silly. And I kind of knew what she meant, though I cant back that up right now. Except with this anecdote--my half-Indian friend married my brother, and at our double wedding we were posing for pictures and we were all joking around and posing stupidly, and her Indian father finally said: Im not taking any more pictures. You are a silly bunch! None of us ever forgot that line, it was so funny; and its just not the way a Canadian would have expressed the same sentiment. (Boy this would be a fun dissertation topic.)
