Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen Watkins Glen, NY, USA Round Seven of the 2013 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series Starts With a Twist Round seven of the 2013 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series, Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen, started with a twist for the 14 Daytona Prototypes after their qualifying session was aborted yesterday due to rain. The rule book then dictated how the grid would be set – in the order of the series standings – which meant teams that had been faster in the lead up to the six-hour endurance challenge at Watkins Glen International might not be starting in an advantageous position. “You’ve got to keep, as much as possible, a ‘business as usual’ attitude,” said Scott Pruett, the American racing star who shares driving duties in the #01 TELMEX/Chip Ganassi Racing BMW Riley with Mexico’s Memo Rojas. The team is ranked sixth, translating to a number six starting position instead of a possible front row start based on the fast time of 2:11:039 that Pruett recorded in practice. “As much as we may not agree with the rules you really can’t let that be a factor, you have to just get out there and have as good a race as possible. Our BMW Riley is running great but the biggest question now at Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen is one word….rain. The last few days have been sun, then rain, then sun, and then rain again; these are the kind of conditions most challenging to drive in.” The qualifying session for the 16 GT cars was completed successfully, and the team with the most to gain, or lose, was starting mid pack. The #44 Magnus Porsche team is not only celebrating its 44th race but also needing to defend their lead in the championship series points. “We were quick at the end of the day yesterday and fastest in final practice but in the long run we may have some issues today in the race,” said Andy Lally who leads the GT driver series standings with co-driver John Potter. “During the race you want to keep things on the cool side, but of course today is the hottest day of the weekend. Actually we could use a little bit of rain because that would help cool things off. If things cool down a little I think the Porsches will do really good.” Rain or shine, teamwork will ultimately be the key to which of the DP, GT and GX teams stands atop the podium at the conclusion of this classic road race.
