Said to me earlier today in a discussion: Your faith in the free market is touching but misguided. (Thinking about these issues is my job ....) Office politics, unfair treatment, etc. undermine the consequentialist justifications of markets - the efficiency results dont go through under such conditions. As a matter of fact, we dont keep our jobs b/c we actually do them well - we can do them well and not have the boss see that or we can do them poorly and dupe the boss. And if the bosses nephew wants your job, performance is irrelevant. This person is asserting that doing our jobs well may actually be the reason we lose our job. Is it just me or is that illogical? What employer wants to get rid of people who do their jobs well? Thoughts?
