Saint Louis Zoo Rivers Edge Keeper Katie Pilgram-Kloppe joined - TopicsExpress

Saint Louis Zoo Rivers Edge Keeper Katie Pilgram-Kloppe joined keepers and others from the Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield and the Kansas City Zoo to urge Gov. Jay Nixon to help them save elephants that are being killed at the rate of 96 a day. Poachers are ripping out African elephant tusks for the ivory. St. Louis’ own Sen. Joe Keaveny (D-4th District) joined the keepers in encouraging the governor to help them ban the sale of ivory in Missouri. The Obama Administration has acted to stop the importation of ivory, but federal law can’t stop ivory sales that stay within state borders. The three Missouri accredited zoos are among 118 U.S. zoos that have signed on to collect at least 960 drawings and letters (we turned in over 1,600!) from children to deliver to governors across the nation by August 12, celebrated at zoos nationwide as World Elephant Day.
