Saint Lucy is patroness of Siracusa, Sicily. St. Lucy was a wealthy Sicilian who gave her goods to the poor and refused to marry. One of her suitors denounced her to the authorities as being Christian. She was put to death in 304. We visited her church a few years ago. This morning I cooked Cuccia . It is cooked wheat berries. The wheat is soaked overnight. I cooked the wheat in lightly salted water till tender. Drained the water. 1 cup of cooked wheat berries, 2 cups milk, 1/2 cup sugar, grated lemon peel, 1/4 cup honey, 1/4 chopped candied fruit. Place the milk in a pot, add sugar and lemon peel. Bring to a boil, add the drained wheat berries, and simmer very gently, until the milk is absorbed. Stir often. Spoon into bowls and add honey and fruit to taste. I made a small bowl for myself. My husband doesnt care for this. I enjoyed it. It reminds me of my mamma. Ill use the rest of the wheat berries for a soup or salad. Arancine are also a traditional food eaten today in Sicily. Ill see if I have time today to make a few. Have a good day.
