Saint Stephen of Hungary Optional Memorial St. Steven was born in 975 in Hungary, his given name Vojk. He took the Christian name Stephen when he and his father, a Hungarian chief, were baptized together by the Archbishop of Prague. He married the sister of Emperor St. Henry II and later, St. Stephen would become the first King of Hungary. He petitioned Rome to support his cause of Christianizing Hungary, whereby Pope Sylvester II granted him permission to form dioceses. St. Steven’s influence extended beyond the borders of Hungary. He formed hospices in Rome, Constantinople, and Ravenna, as well as a monastery in Jerusalem. He was canonized by Pope Gregory VII in 1083.
