Saint for the Day March 12th. St. Theophanes. d.818. A native of Constantinople and educated at the imperial court, he married early in life, but two years later allowed his wife to become a nun and himself joined the monks of polychronion. Some time later he founded two monasteries and governed one of them as abbot. For his steadfast opposition to iconoclasm he was banished by Leo the Armenian to Samothrace where he died from the ill-treatment he had received.
