Saint for the Day March 8th. St. John of God. 1495-1550. Born in the diocese of Evora in Portugal, John followed various vocations for the first 40 years of his life; shepherd, soldier, pedlar, superintendent of slaves in Morocco, vendor of religious books near Gibraltar. He was led to a more perfect life by a sermon by Bl .John of Avila. Finally in 1540 he settled in Grenada and founded a hospital where he tended the sick. He was Canonised in 1690 and declared patron of the sick.
