Saint for the Day October 21st. St. Hilarion.(d.372) To Hilarion is due the credit, says St. Jerome, of introducing into Palestine and Syria the eremitic life as it was led in the Egyptian deserts. Born at Tabatha, not far from Gaza, he studied at Alexandria and, converted by a Christian philosopher, had received baptism at the age of fifteen and took St. Antony the Great as his model. On his return to Gaza disciples soon flocked around him and he founded several monasteries in Palestine. The latter part of his life is the story of his escapes from the crowds who followed him on account of his miracles. He lived on Mt. Sinai, and in Egypt, Sicily, Dalmatia, Paphos and Cyprus, where he died at the age of eighty. Quote for Today. ‘Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.’ (Matt. 16: 18)
