Saint for the Day September 14th. The Triumph of the Cross. It appears to have been on a pilgrimage to Palestine, between 325 and 347, that Our Lord’s Cross was discovered by the Empress St. Helena in a pit near Calvary. A basilica was dedicated on the site of the Holy Sepulchre, and the ceremony commemorated today was first held there, the Bishop showing the wood of our salvation to the people for veneration. The feasts of the Cross, the Finding and the Exaltation (Sept 14th and May 3rd.)seem to have been exchanged over the years in the liturgy. Originally they were associated with the dedication of the basilica and with the vision of the Cross accorded to St. Cyril of Jerusalem in 351. Quote for Today. ‘If we find the answer to that, why it is that we and the universe exist, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason – for then we would know the mind of God.’ (Stephen Hawking 1988)
