Saipem Jack Up Rig Lost - 102 saved, 1 missing, 6 injured Published in Oil Industry News on Tuesday, 2 July 2013 Saipem has just issued a press release confirming the news that the Perro Negro 6 Jack Up Rig has sank while mobilising in Angola at approx. 10.30AM CEST on July 1st. 102 of the crew were successfully evacuated and several are currently receiving medical treatment in Soyo. 1 Crew member is missing having gone overboard and a major search and rescue operation has been under way. It is believed that one of the rigs three legs punched through the seabed during the preloading procedure causing the rig to suddenly tilt. The hull section was then damaged and the rig started taking on water which caused it to sink a short time later. The event occurred during the rig positioning on location prior to starting drilling operations, between the coasts of Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo, near the mouth of the Congo River, in approximately 40 metres of water. The rig working for Chevron was mobilising onto the CRX Pipeline South Pigging Platform in Block2 Angola to begin drilling the Well Intersection beneath the Congo Canyon for the CRX Pipeline Project.
