Sakala Shiva- Sakala is the compound. sa-kala; kala meaning "a small part of anything, a bit. a jot, an atom," especially, "a digit of the moon"; sa meaning "with." The digits of the moon are sixteen in number: sakala is the moon possessed of all its digits. "whole, entire, complete, all" -the Full Moon. The opposite of sakala is nilkala, "devoid of digits or of constituent parts"; the New Moon, which, though virtually existent, is imperceptible, intangible, apparently non-existent. The upper figure. then. is Sakala Shiva; the figure beneath is Nishkala Shiva: i.e., the figure above is the Absolute in its full actuality. the lower one is the Absolute in its transcendent, dormant, quiescent state-mere potentiality. Nishkala Shiva - is called "the dead body, the corpse" (lava). In Sanskrit there is a meaningful play implied in this juxtaposition of the two names, Shava and Shiva.
