Salaam my Muslim brothers and sisters, As we enter the holy month of Ramadan, Id like to remind you that there is no better time to read and acquire an understanding of the BEST book that you arent reading: Al-Quran. Im sharing this link with you because I really think for non-Arabic speaking Muslims, a mere reading of an English translaiton is a futile attempt at understanding Allahs message to us. Too much is lost in translation and this is especially true in the case of translating classic Arabic. There is a reason that Allah (swt) chose this to be the language of the Holy book and that is because no language can ever be drawn in parallel with it, thereby rendering all translations of the Quran to be a mere approximation of its true meaning. Does this mean that the only solution to this problem is for you to fully learn the Arabic language? Absolutely not! Learning it is undoubtedly the best solution but is surely not the only one. The following link contains a derth of Quranic resources accumulated by the very renowned Islamic scholar Nouman Ali Khan, from which listening (mp3 files) and reading (pdf files) his tasfeer (Islamic commentary) has enabled me to grasp a much fuller understanding of the Quran. As he explains the Surahs, aya by aya, in a witty and modern context, InshaAllah you will see the complex yet beautiful layers of meaning and conjunctions that are embedded in each of them and truly appreciate the linguistic miracles of our holy book. PLEASE take the time out to give this a go (by yourselves and with your family and friends), for a Muslim can never be too busy for the Quran and if you think you are, youre only fooling yourself. Surah Fatihah (The Opening), as the name suggests, would be a good place to start. I shall more than love to discuss with you anything you might have to ask or say about everything Ive just said and of course, about the Quran itself.
