Salaams everyone! Well its been a crazy week for me! Got back from London today to walk straight into the studio for a bridal booking and only just sat down to catch up with the week! I was honoured and privileged to have had a VIP invite to attend the prestigious Asian Awards at Grosvenor House, London last night. I was sharing a table with two of the recipients of the prestigious award including Salil Shetty...Secretary General of Amnesty International and Sir David Tang who was tooo funny in his critique of the carpet design and how long these kinds of ceremonies go on for! It was great meeting all the different celebrities, MPs and other distinguished guests there...but as I discussed with Salil (who is used to visiting war torn countries and many different prisons as part of Amnesty), its was far cry to what we were both used to seeing in the different parts of the world where often humanitarian efforts and abuse of human rights are investigated by the international organisation. The sheer personal wealth of all the billionaires in the room last night did make a sad reality stand out for me despite all the glitz and glamour of the evening...it gave me an insight into how the other half live...as compared to the billions of those in dire poverty...such a stark contrast to what I was used to seeing in the short few years that I have become involved in humanitarianism. The highlight of the night for me though was the opportunity to meet Ahmed Kathrada...the South African politician and former political prisoner (who had spent time imprisoned with Nelson Mandela) anti apartheid activist who made an emotional address to us all about those who had been killed in the struggle for justice and freedom and were not here to see these days. They also had a charity auction on with a Christies auctioneer trying to entice Gok Wan to up his bid in order to raise money for oxfam. He loves to swear...but got told off by the host..Ms Bedi to behave and apologise! It was a great evening...but glad it only comes once a year! :/
