Salamat sa CCTV ----- ng kapitbahay, nahuli ang mga kriminal! Maganda talaga ang may cctv...ebidensiyang malinaw! It turns out that someone elses CCTV could prove to be helpful, not only to the owner, but to their neighbor as well. Such was the story of a homeowner whose flat in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire was burglarized when he was on holiday in Skye. A neighbor of 58-year-old Edward Lyons gave him a copy of the footage from his CCTV wherein two men could be seen as they broke into the flat of the owner; posing as workmen in high-visibility jackets and carrying a tool kit to complete their masquerade. The thieves had stolen £30,000 worth of cash and an expensive engagement ring which had left the flat owner truly devastated. Mr Lyons decided to post the footage of the burglary on Facebook which led to one Gordon Doherty, aged 36, being identified as one of the thieves and thereby arrested. On closer look at the footage, Doherty and an unknown accomplice were seen breaking in; using the tools they brought to force open the front door. The neighbor of Mr Lyons had initially thought the men were joiners working on Mr Lyons property. But he got suspicious when he noticed that the door had not been properly put back. Hence, the alarm was raised, says a report in Daily Record. Mr Lyons, a tattoo artist, rushed back home and found his safe, which contained £18,000, already gone from under his bed. Moreover, his mothers £12,000 engagement ring was also gone. He reportedly said, Somebody knew I was away on holiday and thats why they did it when they did, they knew my dogs werent in the house either. Thanks to his neighbors CCTV, the thief was caught, but the sadder part is that he wont get his mothers jewelry and his money back because the insurance wont cover me for that kind of money being in the house. I didnt even know my neighbor had that camera, but Im glad because the footage helped catch the guy who did it, he added. Doherty had admitted a charge of breaking into the house and stealing a rucksack, jewelry and money in August last year, and just recently he was jailed for 27 months at Hamilton Sheriff Court. According to the defense lawyer Kevin McCarron, He [Doherty] had been coerced into doing this by other people and stupidly went along with it. Before this happened he had his own business doing garden maintenance and was earning between £400 and £500 a week from it and now has lost that. I would ask you deal with this by way of community disposal. Sheriff John Miller said on the case: This was an incredibly well thought out crime where you went to the door of the complainer dressed as a workman to gain entry into the property with the intent to steal. From the victims impact statement I can see that this has left the complainer devastated and facing hardship. These were his life savings and he has now lost them because of your actions and there is no alternative to custody. This is one of those instances when CCTV and social media go well together in helping solve crimes.
