Saliha Sami Saliha Sami came to Canada from the Oromiya zone of Ethiopia in 1995. Being a highly diverse country, Ethiopia has a population of approximately 93 million and over 80 ethnic groups, of which Saliha represents the Oromo language and culture (approximately 45 million). Her music fuses traditional Oromo music with modern themes. Saliha sings of love, culture and social evolution in the Oromo language and teaches through her music the importance of connecting with ones culture for identity. As a mother of two, university student and professional health care worker, Saliha still finds time to devote to her music. She researches old cultures and revives them in her songs to remind people of their forgotten traditions. She is motivated to write her music in this way for the younger generation and to prevent such traditions from being lost entirely. Saliha finds inspiration in all musicians who share their unique talents with others but looks to Oromo artist, Ali Birra, as a role model as he has dedicated his music to promoting social justice. Although Saliha is based in Calgary, she frequently travels to throughout Canada, the United States, Australia and back home to Ethiopia with her music. Saliha is excited to represent her culture at the Afrikadey! Festival as well as connect with the music community in Calgary.
