Salom Shilongo is a Namibian born author, poet, screenwriter/playwright; he is a teacher by profession. The Hopeless Hopes is his debut novel and he wrote it because of what is happening in many African countries; also to tackle racism throughout the world. Mr. Shilongos title: The Hopeless Hopes - an epic story of one man’s journey through the ending of apartheid and his crushed hopes for a better world. It is a tragic tale of loss, struggle and hope to take care of his family before and after Namibias independence. Robert is sent at a young age to work in Otjomuise, where he becomes disillusioned about the streets being paved with gold. Taken advantage of at one place, he seeks opportunity elsewhere, and is left with dashed hopes and broken dreams. Eventually Robert joins Namibias fight for freedom. Apartheid is overthrown and he is filled with a sense of hope that his situation will change and a prosperous future awaits.Throughout this Robert remains desperately hopeful that he will be rewarded with a life free of poverty. But it turns out to be hopeless hopes. The apartheid government was replaced by a corrupt government and Roberts struggle continues.
