Salt Lake Comic Con Day 2: Winkler delights, Serling remembered The second day of Salt Lake Comic Con helped push overall festival ticket sales past the 40,000 mark, a new all-time record for a first-ever Comic Con and probably the largest convention to ever play in Salt Lake City. Actor Henry Winkler was perhaps the accessible celebrity on Autograph Row, stepping out from behind his table to pose for photos (for free), shake hands and generally prove that he is the all-around nice guy we’ve always felt him to be. “Love this convention, love this city, love this crowd,” he told me between meet and greets with adoring fans. From being “The Fonz” to his hilarious role now on Children’s Hospital, Winkler is a delight at this event. He took center stage Saturday morning and will be back by his autograph table this afternoon. The much anticipated William Shatner-Adam West presentation on Friday was well received, even though for a time it appeared that media would not be allowed to cover it. But a few did sneak in, and the two veteran actors traded jokes and barbs about their respective careers. Both will be very busy autographers today, but be aware that it will cost you to get a signed photo or even have one taken with them. Shatner is charging $75 per, and I think West is a bit cheaper. In fact, most of the celebrities are charging for photos or signatures. Prices vary, but hey, if you’re a fan, it’s worth it. Author Anne Serling gave a wonderful presentation on her biography of her father, Twilight Zone creator and writer Rod Serling. She told an audience made up of both young and old that there were many misconceptions about her father, whose work continues to resonate and inspire nearly five decades since the show aired. Her book, “As I Knew Him—My Dad, Rod Serling,” is a great read. She’ll be signing copies today as well in booth 103 in the convention center. This final day’s big events: at 3 p.m., Shatner takes center stage to discuss “Captain James T. Kirk,” and at 5 p.m., it’s “Excelsior!” with the amazing Stan Lee, also on center stage. Both presentations are part of the admission price. (Not sure if tickets are still available or not). Salt Lake Comic Con wraps up this evening with a 7 p.m. awards ceremony, and the doors close about 9 p.m. at the Salt Palace Convention Center. Will it return in 2014? What do you think? Photos to be posted shortly.
