Saluda history fact of the day : Saludas railroad was know as the steepest grade is well know However before the railroad The mountains around saluda were also quite an undertaking for drovers/ travelers and pioneers headed west Two mountain gaps Howard gap and paces gap became a gateway for travelers headed into the mountains from the low country - Howard gap named for capt Thomas Howard the hero of the battle of round mountain ( warrior mtn area presently ) against the Cherokee was a pathway from Cherokee to Asheville used from 17oos to 1925 before hwy 176 was built portions of the road is still in use today as state maintained asphalt roads . The road was also the site of a small skirmish at the end of the civil war named stonemans raid in April 1965 during this capt b.tmotris of the nc 64th CSa regiment was captured near his home on Howard gap while returning to his troops A portion of Howard gap once gross the green river - near the Peter guice bridge on I-26 a toll bridge run by Peter guice and the guice family one stood below the interstate bridge across the green river
